Na sua forma doce como a Banana D\u00f3lar e na sua forma culin\u00e1ria n\u00e3o doce, \u00e9 uma parte principal da dieta das pessoas que vivem em pa\u00edses tropicais. Desde os finais do s\u00e9culo XIX, a banana come\u00e7a a tornar-se o fruto mais importante do com\u00e9rcio mundial. A banana produzida na Am\u00e9rica Central e nos Cara\u00edbas come\u00e7ou a exportar para os EUA e para a Europa. Hoje em dia a banana \u00e9 uma parte importante da base de fruta dos pa\u00edses industriais. Com o aumento dos rendimentos na China e na Europa de Leste, novos mercados est\u00e3o a produzir novas exig\u00eancias para a banana.<\/p><p>H\u00e1 dois importantes\u00a0<u>doen\u00e7as das manchas foliares<\/u> em bananas:\u00a0<u>Sigatoka Amarelo e Sigatoka Negro<\/u>. A Sigatoka Amarela causada pelo fungo Mycosphaerella musicola tem sido espalhada por todas as \u00e1reas de cultivo da Banana, enquanto a Sigatoka Negra causada pelo fungo <em>M. fijiensis var. difformis<\/em>\u00a0foi encontrado em Fiji. A Sigatoka Negra est\u00e1 a mostrar uma virul\u00eancia muito superior \u00e0 da Sigatoka Amarela e, por essa raz\u00e3o, tornou-se a doen\u00e7a mais importante da Banana na maioria dos pa\u00edses &amp; Extension. 2004<br \/><strong>-\u2022 <\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Sigatoka Negra Um Fio Crescente para o Cultivo da Banana;<\/span>\u00a0Douglas H. Mar\u00edn, Del Monte Fresh Produce; Ronald A. Romero, Chiquita Brands; Mauricio Guzm\u00e1n, National Banana Corporation of Costa Rica; Turner B. Sutton, North Carolina State University, Raleigh<\/p><p>A faixa da folha negra (BLS), ou \"Black Sigatoka\", \u00e9 a doen\u00e7a foliar mais prejudicial das bananas em todo o mundo. A maioria das \u00e1reas dos tr\u00f3picos e subtropicais s\u00e3o afectadas, com perdas relatadas de 30-50%. O primeiro relato de BLS no Pac\u00edfico foi h\u00e1 40 anos atr\u00e1s no Vale de Sigatoka, Fiji. A maioria dos fungicidas utilizados na produ\u00e7\u00e3o de bananas \u00e9 para controlar a BLS. A banana do tipo \"Williams\", cultivada pela maioria dos cultivadores comerciais, \u00e9 muito suscept\u00edvel \u00e0 doen\u00e7a f\u00fangica. As plantas infectadas t\u00eam menos folhas, o que leva a menos e menores frutos, a uma colheita atrasada, ao amadurecimento prematuro e a frutos de menor qualidade.<\/p><h3><strong>Impacto potencial<\/strong><\/h3><p>A sigatoka preta causa a destrui\u00e7\u00e3o do tecido foliar da bananeira, o que afecta as capacidades fotossint\u00e9ticas da planta e pode reduzir os rendimentos em at\u00e9 50%. A sigatoka negra \u00e9 um dos principais factores respons\u00e1veis pelo decl\u00ednio das ind\u00fastrias de exporta\u00e7\u00e3o de banana nas Na\u00e7\u00f5es do Pac\u00edfico Sul. As planta\u00e7\u00f5es comerciais que produzem bananas para exporta\u00e7\u00e3o t\u00eam de manter um dispendioso programa de pulveriza\u00e7\u00e3o fungicida para controlar a sigatoka negra, e t\u00eam sido criticadas com base em considera\u00e7\u00f5es ambientais e de sa\u00fade humana. Contudo, se n\u00e3o forem controladas, as frutas produzidas em plantas doentes podem amadurecer prematuramente durante a expedi\u00e7\u00e3o e causar mais perdas. A devasta\u00e7\u00e3o da doen\u00e7a foi controlada por pulveriza\u00e7\u00f5es qu\u00edmicas nos anos seguintes (15-17 aplica\u00e7\u00f5es fungicidas), mas isto aumentou consideravelmente o custo de produ\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p><h3><strong>Vegetais afectados<\/strong><\/h3><p>Os sintomas definidos de sigatoka negra s\u00f3 foram registados em\u00a0<em>Musa<\/em>\u00a0(Bananas),\u00a0<em>Musa paradisiaca<\/em>\u00a0(Pl\u00e1tanos),\u00a0<em>Musa acuminata<\/em>\u00a0(Banana selvagem) e\u00a0<em>Musa acuminata<\/em>\u00a0(subsp.\u00a0<em>bantesii<\/em>\u00a0e subsp.\u00a0<em>zebrina<\/em>). Os cultivares diferem na sua reac\u00e7\u00e3o ao patog\u00e9nico. A imunidade n\u00e3o \u00e9 conhecida e \u00e9 poss\u00edvel que outras esp\u00e9cies e subesp\u00e9cies selvagens de\u00a0<em>Musa<\/em>\u00a0est\u00e3o infectados, mas a doen\u00e7a n\u00e3o se desenvolve significativamente.\u00a0<em>Mycosphaerella fijiensis<\/em>\u00a0pode tamb\u00e9m atacar a fase de muda das bananas selvagens.<\/p><h3><strong>\u00c9poca de ocorr\u00eancia<\/strong><\/h3><p>Os esporos negros sigatoka formam-se facilmente durante os ver\u00f5es tropicais e subtropicais ou em condi\u00e7\u00f5es de\u00a0<u>elevada humidade e precipita\u00e7\u00e3o<\/u>especialmente se houver uma pel\u00edcula de \u00e1gua livre sobre as folhas. O principal meio de propaga\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 a lavagem com chuva ou salpicos de esporos, mas mais tarde, no desenvolvimento da doen\u00e7a, os esporos s\u00e3o tamb\u00e9m descarregados \u00e0 for\u00e7a nas correntes de ar. A infec\u00e7\u00e3o ocorre nas folhas mais jovens da planta durante e imediatamente ap\u00f3s o desenrolar da doen\u00e7a, mas as folhas mais velhas s\u00e3o mais prop\u00edcias ao desenvolvimento da doen\u00e7a. Os sintomas visuais \u00f3bvios aparecem cerca de 15-20 dias ap\u00f3s a infec\u00e7\u00e3o inicial.<\/p><h3><strong>Sintomas<\/strong><\/h3><p>Os primeiros sintomas aparentes de infec\u00e7\u00e3o foliar s\u00e3o linhas curtas, castanho-avermelhadas com cerca de 2 mm de comprimento. As linhas transformam-se em estrias castanhas de 20-30 mm de comprimento que se alargam em manchas el\u00edpticas, castanhas na parte inferior da folha, pretas na superf\u00edcie superior. As manchas s\u00e3o ligeiramente afundadas e rodeadas por uma aur\u00e9ola amarelada. A seguir, o centro da grande mancha torna-se cinzento, rodeado por uma linha preta e uma aur\u00e9ola amarela. Finalmente, as manchas fundem-se, matando a folha.<\/p><h3><strong>Epidemiologia<\/strong><\/h3><p>Tanto a Conidia como os asc\u00f3sporos desempenham pap\u00e9is na propaga\u00e7\u00e3o da doen\u00e7a. A forma de con\u00eddio em condi\u00e7\u00f5es\u00a0<u>de elevada humidade<\/u>especialmente se houver uma pel\u00edcula de \u00e1gua livre sobre as folhas. Formam-se durante o desenvolvimento das primeiras fases da doen\u00e7a (especialmente durante a fase de tra\u00e7o 2, fase de listras3, e fase de manchas 4). Os principais meios de dispers\u00e3o s\u00e3o a chuva e os salpicos; as con\u00eddias n\u00e3o s\u00e3o separadas pelo vento. As conidias est\u00e3o sobretudo associadas \u00e0 propaga\u00e7\u00e3o local da doen\u00e7a e s\u00e3o importantes durante per\u00edodos de elevada humidade, orvalho pesado frequente, e chuviscos intermitentes.<\/p><p>Porque\u00a0<em>M. fijiensis<\/em>\u00a0produz relativamente poucas conidias, os asc\u00f3sporos s\u00e3o considerados mais importantes na propaga\u00e7\u00e3o da Sigatoka negra (4,20). Contudo, Jacome et al. (10) afirmaram que as conidias s\u00e3o capazes de causar quantidades significativas de doen\u00e7a, e os sintomas da doen\u00e7a s\u00e3o id\u00eanticos aos causados pela infec\u00e7\u00e3o por asc\u00f3sporos. Ele indicou que as conidias tornam-se mais importantes durante os per\u00edodos secos, quando o desenvolvimento da doen\u00e7a \u00e9 atrasado devido \u00e0 presen\u00e7a de condi\u00e7\u00f5es clim\u00e1ticas menos favor\u00e1veis (10). Os asc\u00f3sporos s\u00e3o o principal meio de\u00a0<u>dispers\u00e3o em dist\u00e2ncias mais longas<\/u>\u00a0dentro das planta\u00e7\u00f5es e em novas \u00e1reas, e s\u00e3o o meio habitual de propaga\u00e7\u00e3o durante longos per\u00edodos de tempo de chuva (3,4,6,10, 11,15).<\/p><p>Os asc\u00f3sporos s\u00e3o produzidos em pseudotecia em les\u00f5es maduras, que s\u00e3o comuns nas folhas mais velhas da planta ou em folhas mortas deitadas no ch\u00e3o. Meredith e Lawrence (14) relataram que as pseudotecias s\u00e3o produzidas em ambos os lados da superf\u00edcie da folha, mas n\u00fameros mais elevados est\u00e3o presentes na superf\u00edcie adaxial. Pelo contr\u00e1rio, Gauhl et al. (6) descobriram que foram produzidas mais pseudotecias e asc\u00f3sporos na superf\u00edcie da folha abaxial. Embora Burt et al. (2) tenham descoberto que aproximadamente 4,5 asc\u00f3sporos s\u00e3o libertados por pseudot\u00e9cio, este n\u00famero parece muito baixo considerando a alta concentra\u00e7\u00e3o de in\u00f3culo que est\u00e1 presente no ar ap\u00f3s a chuva (4).<\/p><h3><strong>Liberta\u00e7\u00e3o Ascospore<\/strong><\/h3><p>Requer a presen\u00e7a de <u>uma pel\u00edcula de \u00e1gua da chuva ou do orvalho<\/u>\u00a0que imbibe a pseudotecia e resulta na ejec\u00e7\u00e3o for\u00e7ada dos asc\u00f3sporos atrav\u00e9s da camada limite da folha, onde s\u00e3o disseminados por correntes de ar (15,20).\u00a0<u>A matura\u00e7\u00e3o da pseudotecia requer satura\u00e7\u00e3o<\/u>\u00a0dos tecidos das folhas mortas durante aproximadamente 48 h (3,4,7,10,11,15). Sob condi\u00e7\u00f5es havaianas, as concentra\u00e7\u00f5es de asc\u00f3sporos aumentaram durante a noite, foram mais elevadas cerca das 0600 h, e diminu\u00edram significativamente durante o dia. Em dias de chuva, os picos de concentra\u00e7\u00e3o ocorreram pouco depois do in\u00edcio da chuva. Os aumentos sazonais das concentra\u00e7\u00f5es m\u00e9dias di\u00e1rias de asc\u00f3sporos est\u00e3o associados ao aumento da precipita\u00e7\u00e3o e da humidade relativa (15). Gauhl (4), trabalhando com bananas, relatou resultados semelhantes em condi\u00e7\u00f5es costarriquenhas. Enquanto Meredith et al. (15) n\u00e3o encontraram provas de que a produ\u00e7\u00e3o ou liberta\u00e7\u00e3o de asc\u00f3sporos tenha sido afectada pelas temperaturas m\u00ednimas, Gauhl (4) determinou que h\u00e1 uma redu\u00e7\u00e3o na produ\u00e7\u00e3o de in\u00f3culos durante os meses mais secos (ou menos chuvosos) do ano na zona das Cara\u00edbas da Costa Rica, que \u00e9 tamb\u00e9m a esta\u00e7\u00e3o com as temperaturas mais baixas. Os asc\u00f3sporos s\u00e3o dispersos pelo vento; no entanto, a dispers\u00e3o a longa dist\u00e2ncia \u00e9 limitada a algumas centenas de quil\u00f3metros devido \u00e0 sua susceptibilidade \u00e0 radia\u00e7\u00e3o ultravioleta (17). N\u00e3o foi demonstrada uma rela\u00e7\u00e3o consistente entre a descarga de asc\u00f3sporos e o desenvolvimento de doen\u00e7as, limitando assim a utilidade da armadilha de esporos para a previs\u00e3o de doen\u00e7as (5,11). Os asc\u00f3sporos s\u00e3o depositados principalmente na superf\u00edcie inferior da folha durante o desenrolar de uma nova folha, produzindo um padr\u00e3o de bandas de infec\u00e7\u00f5es no lado que \u00e9 exposto pela primeira vez, o que \u00e9 um reflexo do aumento da deposi\u00e7\u00e3o de esporos na folha cil\u00edndrica da candela durante o seu desenrolar, em oposi\u00e7\u00e3o a toda a l\u00e2mina aberta da folha. Consequentemente, a maioria das infec\u00e7\u00f5es ocorre na superf\u00edcie abaxial das folhas (3,7).<\/p><h3><strong>Infec\u00e7\u00e3o<\/strong><\/h3><p>Os tubos de germes levam aproximadamente 48 a 72 h para penetrar os estomas (1,20), embora o fungo possa crescer ep\u00edfita na superf\u00edcie da folha por at\u00e9 6 dias antes de penetrar realmente as folhas (1).\u00a0<u>Infec\u00e7\u00e3o bem sucedida<\/u>\u00a0\u00e9 promovida pela extens\u00e3o\u00a0<u>per\u00edodos de elevada humidade e a presen\u00e7a de \u00e1gua livre nas folhas<\/u>\u00a0(3,7,13). A germina\u00e7\u00e3o m\u00e1xima ocorre quando h\u00e1 \u00e1gua livre presente. As conidias germinam numa gama mais ampla de humidade relativa (92 a 100%) do que os asc\u00f3sporos (98 a 100%). O efeito de\u00a0<u>temperatura<\/u>\u00a0sobre a germina\u00e7\u00e3o pode ser caracterizada por uma fun\u00e7\u00e3o de resposta quadr\u00e1tica, com um \u00f3ptimo estimado de 26,5\u00b0C (10). Stover (21) observou um crescimento m\u00e1ximo de tubos de germes asc\u00f3sporos a\u00a0<u>26 a 28\u00b0C<\/u>\u00a0ap\u00f3s 24 h de incuba\u00e7\u00e3o. Jacome e Schuh (8,9) relataram que as folhas mais velhas eram mais suscept\u00edveis; contudo, E. Bureau (comunica\u00e7\u00e3o pessoal) e Romero (18) observaram que as folhas mais novas s\u00e3o mais suscept\u00edveis (da primeira \u00e0 terceira) do que as mais velhas.<\/p><h3><strong>Per\u00edodo de incuba\u00e7\u00e3o<\/strong><\/h3><p>O tempo entre a infec\u00e7\u00e3o e o aparecimento dos sintomas varia de acordo com as condi\u00e7\u00f5es meteorol\u00f3gicas e a susceptibilidade das plantas (68). Nas bananas, estima-se que o tempo de infec\u00e7\u00e3o da folha coincide com o aparecimento de uma nova folha a partir do \u00e1pice do pseudostem (20). Em condi\u00e7\u00f5es muito favor\u00e1veis na Costa Rica, e com um hospedeiro suscept\u00edvel, a\u00a0<u>per\u00edodo de incuba\u00e7\u00e3o<\/u>\u00a0pode ser t\u00e3o curto como 13 a 14 dias, enquanto que durante per\u00edodos de tempo desfavor\u00e1vel, a dura\u00e7\u00e3o do per\u00edodo de incuba\u00e7\u00e3o pode estender-se at\u00e9 35 dias. Existem relat\u00f3rios semelhantes da Nig\u00e9ria sobre pl\u00e1tanos (16). Durante a esta\u00e7\u00e3o chuvosa, o per\u00edodo de incuba\u00e7\u00e3o foi de 14 dias, mas na esta\u00e7\u00e3o seca foi de 24 dias. A dura\u00e7\u00e3o do per\u00edodo de incuba\u00e7\u00e3o tamb\u00e9m varia em fun\u00e7\u00e3o da susceptibilidade da cultivar \u00e0 M. fijiensis. O per\u00edodo de incuba\u00e7\u00e3o foi de 26,2 e 25,1 dias, respectivamente, nas cultivares FHIA 1 e FHIA 2, dois h\u00edbridos sint\u00e9ticos tetrapl\u00f3ides desenvolvidos pela FHIA, em compara\u00e7\u00e3o com 22,4 dias na cultivar suscept\u00edvel Grande Naine (19).<\/p><p>Depois de penetrar na folha, as hifas de &lt;<em>M. fijiensis<\/em>\u00a0colonizar as c\u00e9lulas adjacentes durante aproximadamente 7 dias sem qualquer evid\u00eancia de perturba\u00e7\u00e3o das c\u00e9lulas. As hifas vegetativas podem emergir dos estomas e crescer na superf\u00edcie da folha e penetrar nos estomas adjacentes ou produzir conidi\u00f3foros e conidias. Este crescimento ep\u00edfito permite que o fungo colonize o tecido foliar adjacente, o que resulta num r\u00e1pido desenvolvimento de sintomas (4,20).\u00a0<em>M. fijiensis<\/em>\u00a0tem uma maior capacidade de penetrar v\u00e1rios estomas do que\u00a0<em>M. musicola<\/em>que resulta numa maior mancha do que com o antigo agente patog\u00e9nico (20).<\/p><h3><strong>Per\u00edodo latente<\/strong><\/h3><p>Embora as conidias possam ser produzidas em les\u00f5es que apresentem sintomas iniciais de\u00a0<em>M. fijiensis<\/em>\u00a0e contribuir para a epidemia, o per\u00edodo latente \u00e9 definido pelo momento em que o fungo come\u00e7a a produzir les\u00f5es com pseudotecia madura e asc\u00f3sporos, que s\u00e3o a principal fonte de in\u00f3culo. Tal como o per\u00edodo de incuba\u00e7\u00e3o, o per\u00edodo latente tamb\u00e9m varia de acordo com as condi\u00e7\u00f5es clim\u00e1ticas, a susceptibilidade do hospedeiro, e a intensidade das infec\u00e7\u00f5es. O per\u00edodo de lat\u00eancia variou de 25 dias durante a esta\u00e7\u00e3o chuvosa (Junho a Dezembro) a 70 dias durante a esta\u00e7\u00e3o seca em Guapiles, Costa Rica. Quando o tempo \u00e9 altamente prop\u00edcio \u00e0 descarga de asc\u00f3sporos e infec\u00e7\u00f5es, muitas infec\u00e7\u00f5es ocorrem nas folhas. Quando as infec\u00e7\u00f5es s\u00e3o densas, coalescem rapidamente numa fase muito precoce de desenvolvimento, acelerando o aparecimento de manchas maduras que se caracterizam pela presen\u00e7a de pseudotecia e asc\u00f3sporos (22). Nessas condi\u00e7\u00f5es, as folhas s\u00e3o r\u00e1pida e gravemente danificadas. O per\u00edodo de lat\u00eancia tamb\u00e9m varia de acordo com o n\u00edvel de resist\u00eancia. Por exemplo, o tempo desde a emerg\u00eancia da folha at\u00e9 ao primeiro sintoma de mancha madura sob as mesmas condi\u00e7\u00f5es naturais para a cultivar Currar\u00e9, uma banana de cozedura pertencente ao subgrupo banana, foi de 44 dias em compara\u00e7\u00e3o com 34 dias para a cultivar Valery, uma banana pertencente ao subgrupo Cavendish (4). O termo \"tempo de desenvolvimento da doen\u00e7a\" \u00e9 amplamente utilizado na literatura sobre bananas nos tr\u00f3picos para se referir ao per\u00edodo latente, e \u00e9 definido como o tempo entre a infec\u00e7\u00e3o e a forma\u00e7\u00e3o de manchas maduras. Outro termo comum utilizado na literatura da banana \u00e9 \"tempo de evolu\u00e7\u00e3o dos sintomas\" ou \"per\u00edodo de transi\u00e7\u00e3o\", que \u00e9 o tempo desde os primeiros sintomas at\u00e9 ao aparecimento de pontos de matura\u00e7\u00e3o (6).
